The Shadow Of The The King.

1 Leave a comment on verse 1 0 It’s said in pubs down Fulham Road, as night is drawing in
An eerie shadow bangs in goals, who fans had called The King
No thirty million price tag, manicures or chauffeured rollers
I’m talking bout a working lad, who knew what scoring goals was.

2 Leave a comment on verse 2 0 When the chances came he took ’em, the injuries as well
If he had to, he’d left hook ’em, as big Norman liked to tell
Big Jack had in his book, but couldn’t mark his card
Though he tried by hook or crook, The King tried just as hard.

3 Leave a comment on verse 3 0 Talk to me of anxious nights beneath Old Trafford lights
I’ll talk to you of Athens where we scaled the dizzy heights
When the humble find great fortune, the accolades roll in
When we feasted on goal scoring feats served to us by The King

4 Leave a comment on verse 4 0 Wander down the Fulham Road as crowds are gathering
Wonder how the suits don’t know, tis he, of whom we sing
He’s there beneath the penalty spot, we still applaud his name
With him as King we reached the top, in fraught exciting games

5 Leave a comment on verse 5 0 As night creeps in, they talk of him, lest some of us forget
When we were Kings of Athens on that night of cup upset
Tonight, Stamford Bridge is quiet, as is the nearby Fulham Road
Save for an eerie shadow of a King alone, still banging in the goals!

Notes

The hero’s of yester year, as someone said here recently, were real bona-fide eighteen carat hero’s, and this bloke, as a kid growing up in the smoke, was one of my all time greats.

A modest and friendly bloke who was still up for going down the pub with other fans of our club, even after he left us, to join somebody else!
