The Shattered Dreams Of The Greens

1 Leave a comment on verse 1 0 The Liffey’s overflowing with green tears
Sweet colleens are consoling their men
Who had in their grasp, but failed at last gasp
The chance to avenge once again

2 Leave a comment on verse 2 0 Grafton Street’s littered with shattered dreams
The Swiss have just captured a scalp
The morn will be vibrant with flugelhorns
Playing ‘ Woyoya ‘ over the Alps*

3 Leave a comment on verse 3 0 That Senderos stood between us and the World
Hats off to a a fine strong young man
A mere boy spoiled our joy in the offing
With great strength and tenacity, damn!

4 Leave a comment on verse 4 0 Our hotel reservations are cancelled
Ryanair had laid on extra planes
Its auf wiedersien to thoughts
Of the craic and the sport
The harsh reality’s two weeks in Spain

5 Leave a comment on verse 5 0 Them Swiss should stick to making clocks
Cheese and that weird Toblerone
But the truth is, we were too slow out of the blocks
So for the next World Cup, we’re stuck at home

6 Leave a comment on verse 6 0 A tournament missing the Irish and Scots
Will somehow, not be the same
But if you don’t put that round thing
In the old onion bag
Its odds on, you won’t win the game

Notes

*Woyoya by Osibisa. The first lines are quite fittiing to England and anybody else who qualified as they are:’ we are going, heaven knows where we are going, we’ll know we’re there’!

peace.
