The Spion Kop

1 Leave a comment on verse 1 0 At Anfield in 1906, a huge embankment was raised
Behind the south goal.
It was called the Oakfield Road bank,
And it would become the clubs very soul.
It was then the tallest terrace in England, complete with 132 treads.
Anfields proud new bank of terracing, now home to 28,0000 reds.

2 Leave a comment on verse 2 0 Then Liverpool gave this terrace a new title
That would soon achieve worldwide fame.
It was a man called Ernest Edwards
That gave the ‘Spion Kop’ its brand new name.
And so the Kop was born,
And people expressed astonishment at its grand scale.
But on the giddy heights of this new Kop
Blew many a bitter cold Irish Sea gale.

3 Leave a comment on verse 3 0 So some years later Liverpool FC remedied that problem,
This would now be in 1928.
When the club approached a local architect,
Known for his church halls on the Crosby estate.
His name was Joseph Watson Cabre,
And a vast pitched roof for the Kop he designed.
Once completed, no better covered football terrace
In the world would you ever find.

4 Leave a comment on verse 4 0 And so the Kop went onto achieve stardom;
The famous kopites were always headline news.
Panorama even filmed them for television,
When the kop sang some Beatles songs for their TV crews.
But things were never the same after Hillsborough,
And soon the standing Kop was to be no more.
That sad day arrived for all the kopites against Norwich,
On Saturday 30th April 1994.
