The thrill of the Boxing Day match

1 Leave a comment on verse 1 0 Last Christmas was spent on a ward
nursing a double ankle break
so instead of being at the Boxing Day game
I made do with hospital tea and cake.

2 Leave a comment on verse 2 0 So I’m really looking forward to this one
and hope my team bring me some cheer
three points would be a nice present
and to be off the bottom by the New Year.

3 Leave a comment on verse 3 0 I’ve always loved the Boxing Day fixture
especially the one’s we played at Highfield Road
I recall one in the sixties against Liverpool
when onto the pitch St John and Hunt mightily strode.

4 Leave a comment on verse 4 0 Forty odd thousand there that snowy day
with the smell of cigar smoke in the air
the Liverpool fans singing You’ll Never Walk Alone
one of those matches you’re so glad to be there.

5 Leave a comment on verse 5 0 Our supporters in their new hats and scarves
Sky Blue rattles making a great sound
while the Scousers were chanting Hunts name
the Sky Blue song rang out around the ground.

6 Leave a comment on verse 6 0 And even though the mighty Reds won the match
it’s a Boxing Day game I’ll never forget
standing with my Dad on a freezing cold terrace
in the days when most fans wore a rosette.

Notes

We are at home for the first time for a while this Christmas so am looking forward to being there.

The above mentioned game was a cracker and even though I was only about ten at the time it has hung about in my head since.

The Liverpool team was full of great players so you can imagine the excitement for a young lad, and it was when St John got sent off for knocking out Brian Lewis with a punch a boxer would have been proud of !
