The Wonderful World of Soccer Stars

1 Leave a comment on verse 1 0 That playground pastime,
A schoolboy craze for
Swapping footballers’ faces –
Five for three (new) pence,
In packets with pink gum,
Made the cards smell sweet.

2 Leave a comment on verse 2 0 Some kids had hundreds,
So it seemed – players galore
In the palm of your hand,
To barter, to haggle, to bluff
For the one you really wanted
To complete the set.

3 Leave a comment on verse 3 0 Bestie might be worth three
Of Ipswich, or Stoke City.
Negotiate; that Spurs goalie
For two Wolves strikers –
FKS, ABC, an album full
Of childhood memories.

4 Leave a comment on verse 4 0 Some were hard to find,
Others ten a penny –
Too many of one,
Not enough of another.
Supply and demand,
Lessons for later life…

5 Leave a comment on verse 5 0 Now they’re on ebay,
Reprints I reckon –
After all, who would have
Kept those grubby little
Pictures for thirty five years ?
People like me, of course.

Notes

For those who remember…
