They were Dancing the Liechtenstein Polka

1 Leave a comment on verse 1 0 They were dancing the Liechtenstein Polka
In a field out in Ireland’s Midwest,
And they counted to three
With such sheer Alpine glee,
That the locals were none too impressed.

2 Leave a comment on verse 2 0 They were dancing the Liechtenstein Polka,
And they waltzed through the Longford rearguard,
They followed and led
And kept one step ahead,
Which admittedly wasn’t too hard.

3 Leave a comment on verse 3 0 They were dancing the Liechtenstein Polka,
As poor Longford clog-danced through the mud,
And they skipped o’er the tackles,
Which rose Irish hackles,
Though the lesson was well understood.

4 Leave a comment on verse 4 0 They were dancing the Liechtenstein Polka,
Which silenced the local lads’ chants,
And they twirled Longford round
O’er the soft, squelching ground,
And they led them a merry old dance.

5 Leave a comment on verse 5 0 They were dancing the Liechtenstein Polka,
As they used to, back home in Vaduz.
So light on their feet,
It was beauty complete,
Notwithstanding their old football boots.

6 Leave a comment on verse 6 0 They were dancing the Liechtenstein Polka,
With no shy inhibitions at all,
And the football they played
Was in Austria made –
You might call it a Viennese ball.
