This Is MLS (Haiku)

1 Leave a comment on verse 1 0 Seek the golden door,
wretched refuse who can score
like Defoe lights lamps.

2 Leave a comment on verse 2 0 This is MLS!
Mother of Exiles. Come west!
Big money awaits.

3 Leave a comment on verse 3 0 Let diamond sidewalks
and faucets of flowing beer
Tempt hardworking men.

4 Leave a comment on verse 4 0 Treasure for taking;
Europe’s football forsaking.
Villa may be next.

5 Leave a comment on verse 5 0 Give us your tired rich.
Yearning masses will huddle
if they can free kick.

6 Leave a comment on verse 6 0 Jermain came ashore
and Toronto discovered
imprisoned lightning.

Notes

All elegant phrasing reproduced from:
Emma Lazarus, The New Colossus, 1883 (all verses except 3 and 4) and Bruce Springsteen, American Land, 2006 (We Shall Overcome: The Seeger Sessions, 2006, and Wrecking Ball, 2012) (verses 3 and 4).

The New Colossus is engraved on a bronze plaque and mounted inside the lower level of the pedestal of the Statue of Liberty.

Jermain Defoe’s second goal of yesterday’s TFC 3-2 Columbus Crew fixture lifted me out of my seat. Today there is news of David Villa joining New York City FC. TM
