This ol’ man is no football curmudgeon

1 Leave a comment on verse 1 0 I’m old
and gnarled
and jealous

2 Leave a comment on verse 2 0 I watch them run
and play –
the zealous

3 Leave a comment on verse 3 0 How I wish
I could turn
back the clock

4 Leave a comment on verse 4 0 Line out
and be a pick
instead of epoch

5 Leave a comment on verse 5 0 As it is
I have to observe
from afar

6 Leave a comment on verse 6 0 For the miracle of medicine
has yet to leave
the door ajar

7 Leave a comment on verse 7 0 And so I root
and also wish
more would enjoin

8 Leave a comment on verse 8 0 I’ll not intrude
or chase away
nor football purloin

9 Leave a comment on verse 9 0 But it’s a two-way street
and so I hope, that I meet
with respect

10 Leave a comment on verse 10 0 That neither side
will deride
nor neglect

11 Leave a comment on verse 11 0 And that every pass
every tackle
every goal

12 Leave a comment on verse 12 0 Is greeted with a smile
a wave
and parental control

Notes

in response to Simon Icke’s poem “Young versus Old”

however – if a cricket ball came flying in through my window …..
(more likely to be a hurling ball – a sliotar, here in Ireland)
