This Season Past

1 Leave a comment on verse 1 0 Here in Cork we‘ve always had high hopes out of control
An awful start, It took til UCD to get a goal
Lost down in the RSC, When would we end this drought?
The pups were robbing Mammys sheets and scrawling “Rico Out”
Our expectations sunk so low, dismay it was collective
John Crowleys swift departure put it all into perspective

2 Leave a comment on verse 2 0 Rico had been castigated for lack of big name signings
Healy and then Farrelly, we thought would stop the whining
Pre season anticipation had mouths all over drenched
FIFA said Oh no you don’t and fists instead were clenched
We appealed the heinous crime but the response from them was stolid
Football ain’t much fun when you are always ridden rock solid

3 Leave a comment on verse 3 0 Defeats in the Setanta Cup, would our season ever leaven?
But we qualified for semis and even hit the Ports for seven
Windsor Park, our debut trip, please bring the bitter pill
We played them hallions off the park and still we lost one-nil
The highlight of those opening games was that against Dungannon
Back home, The Shed complete at last, fitting first goal from Colin

4 Leave a comment on verse 4 0 We then beat Pats, a penalty too, McDonnell unbecoming
Using some age old football chants to cover their shortcomings
We didn’t care, we had 3 points, now our season will ignite
In Sligo it caught fire alright, gone up in flames more like
The next few games had ups and downs, a right old top 4 scramble
One thing that kept our hopes alive, the rock called Joey Gamble

5 Leave a comment on verse 5 0 When our special forces went abroad twas Sweden and Iceland
We sent a loyal but motley crew the hosts could understand
In Goal was Kjartan Butterhands, 2 welcome gifts bestowed,
He must have got those handling skills when coached by Counting Crow
Dunnocks thought the Blue Lagoon was some place quite improper
Smidge he tried a backward flip and took an awful hopper

6 Leave a comment on verse 6 0 Word of our Roys run of form had spread to Al Fayed
The other Roy he came to town and took him back instead
Who would score our goals then? How would we now survive?
The “Rico Out” gangs boycott meant we hit the Cats for 5,
Mammys Sheet was soon forgot, like bread we had just eaten
An unlikely hero was unearthed, the next 12 games unbeaten

7 Leave a comment on verse 7 0 The Beast smashed the club record, scoring 10 in 7 games
He was now starting every week, my catch phrase up in flames
2 down at home to Longford, a sprightly pair our hopes revived
And another in the Brandywell, the night my son arrived
Leon showed he has pace to burn, with tackles he ain’t shy,
Had high hopes of my namesake too, not seen him since July

8 Leave a comment on verse 8 0 Our greatest night was yet to come, building like a crescendo
All factions blending neath one roof, less childlike innuendo
We beat the Bohs in their backyard, display was purely spinal
Here’s hoping we can do the same to Longford in the final
And even if we don’t, just take a minute, stop and pray
And remember fondly friends that we have lost along the way
