Those Were The Days

1 Leave a comment on verse 1 0 Once upon a time there was a great player
When he used to score a goal or two
I remembered how well he’d play for hours
In awe of all the good things he used to do.

2 Leave a comment on verse 2 0 Those were the days my friend
He thought they’d never end
He’d sing and dance forever and a day
He’d live the life he’d choose
He’d score and never lose
For he was young and sure to get his big payday.

3 Leave a comment on verse 3 0 Then the busy seasons went rushing by him
He lost his scoring boots along the way
If by chance I saw him in a nightclub
I’d smile at him and then I’d simply say:

4 Leave a comment on verse 4 0 Those were the days my friend
You thought they’d never end
You’d sing and dance forever and a day
You’d live the life you’d choose
You’d score and never lose
For you were young and sure to get that big payday.

5 Leave a comment on verse 5 0 Then one night I saw you in a nightclub
Nothing was the same it used to be
In a glass he saw a strange reflection
Was that lonely footballer really me ?

6 Leave a comment on verse 6 0 Those were the days my friend
I thought they’d never end
I’d sing and dance forever and a day
I’d live the life I’d choose
I’d score and never lose
Because I’d secured my massive payday.

7 Leave a comment on verse 7 0 Then from the terraces there came familiar laughter
But the fans had stopped calling out my name
Here I am now older but no wiser
So I guess I’ll have to give up the beautiful game.

8 Leave a comment on verse 8 0 Those were the days my friend
I thought they’d never end
I’d live the life I’d choose
I’d score and never lose
Now those aren’t the days
No those aren’t now the days.

Notes

A Welsh singer called Mary Hopkin had a hit with this song ‘Those Were The Days’ in the sixties. I heard it recently on the radio around the time of the Wayne Rooney saga that was going on.
This is my version with words changed here and there, I thought to myself don’t get too cocky and arrogant Wayne, or this could be your song one day mate !
