To Be A Fan

1 Leave a comment on verse 1 0 total passion dedication
hopes that soar above your station
this obsessive fascination
just to be a fan
just to be there week on week
through it all however bleak
sometimes you can barely speak
who would be a fan?

2 Leave a comment on verse 2 0 loyatly beyond exception
tinted glasses cloud perception
ev’ry matchday no exception
for the humble fan
same old same old ev’ry time
still you strain for some small sign
still believing rain or shine
you’re the greatest fan
dragged there once like me and you
nothing you can change or do
so ingrained like some tattoo
if you are a fan

3 Leave a comment on verse 3 0 glued together in restriction
it’s not rocket science fiction
think again it’s pure addiction
face it you’re a fan..
face the facts you’ll never change
you’re in touch with ev’ry game
ev’ry year it stays the same
when you are a fan

4 Leave a comment on verse 4 0 when your loved ones all implore
what on Earth you do it for
even though they’ll laugh for sure
tell them you’re a fan
they can never understand it’s
why you’d travel half the land it’s
how this life is neatly planned it’s
why you are a fan
you can’t leave it’s like a potion
tossed like waves upon some ocean
like a child with such devotion
cometh ev’ry fan

5 Leave a comment on verse 5 0 from the moment of your birth
everywhere you go on Earth
Barcelona Poole or Perth
always just a fan
just a face within that crowd
in some pub you scream out loud
beach-towels bed-spreads you’re so proud
just to be a fan*

Notes

*fan – noun (plural fans) an enthusiast. a great admirer or supporter .(short for fanatic) from the Latin fanaticus =inspired by a god!

What is it to be a fan? Been really thinking about it a lot. That’s what fans do though isn’t it, we think about just what a loyal fan we think we are. All of us. If we’re a season ticket holder , if we go to every game. If we’d travel anywhere on the planet. Or if we never go, go sometimes,, can’t go, don’t go, won’t go, don’t know? Hey ho. Whatever . We’re still (WE think) really, really loyals fans, apparently. We always try to be polite, biting our tongues , talking neutrally and considerately with those who hate our clubs .We try to show how much we appreciate other teams , because we’re ‘understanding’ fans .
We do appreciate other team’s lovely players, their lovely ground, their lovely colours (!) their lack of money, their lovely money. But it’s hard – because deep down , be honest – there’s really only one club for you .Or maybe two . Even catching sight of the colour of your team on anything, can be a special sign for some. (Ouch). OMG I must get out more, but only if it doesn’t clash with a game. How sad but brilliant are fans? Your poems and secret admissions please. We promise we won’t tell anyone. Allegedly.
