To Be King On The Wing For An Hour!

1 Leave a comment on verse 1 0 When half-time came in a recent game
And the pound signs left the pitch
An idol from barren days long gone
Was introduced to the nouveau rich

2 Leave a comment on verse 2 0 He walked down wing and we called him King
As he strolled to the penalty box
Fans raised enquiring heads from programme notes
Ceased chewing on plastic food just to watch

3 Leave a comment on verse 3 0 His finest hour on a large screen towered
As us loyal old hands did applaud
Three nil down in a grim steel town after thirty minutes, dead and buried
He rescued us single handedly, so we could draw four all

4 Leave a comment on verse 4 0 A breathtaking display of that art, wing play
With wave after wave attack
To this very day I’ve not seen that sort of pace
As I ponder on this and think back

5 Leave a comment on verse 5 0 As my brother searched for half time solace
A local bobby said “Going back to “Smoke”, have you had enough”?
My brother said ” Maybe… let’s just see what second half brings”
More in blind faith than talking tough?

6 Leave a comment on verse 6 0 We all recall resurrection’s from the dead
On those rare occasions there are such as this
The idol looked up to the screen and beamed
There it was in black and white grainy pictures
His destiny, his zenith, pure ecstasy, sheer bliss

7 Leave a comment on verse 7 0 He treated us to that shuffle
With just a hint of that electric pace
As he did, he was that King from days gone bye again
As a broad smile shone on his face!

Notes

League Cup tie, first leg 1983 / 84?, Sheffield Wednesday v Chelsea at Hillsborough.

We were three nil down after half an hour when John Neal, who was our manager at the time brings on substitute Paul (King) Canonville.

The rest as they say is history as we draw four all, take them back to the Bridge and finish the job!

Howard Wilkinson, sat on the dug out bench, just burst into tears as his team of six footers was torn apart by a flying young winger they were unable to stop!

Brilliant! Real Roy Of The Roves stuff and no mistake.

peace.

kev.
