To Meet A Legend

1 Leave a comment on verse 1 0 Amongst legless men, tales so cruel
Mill Road Hospital in Liverpool
Was once a footballer of real flair
Waiting quietly in his wheelchair
A mother sits close to her young son
Reads a football comic, almost done
She sends him over with a pen
To meet a legend from way back when
An ironic twist in fate’s strange game
That missing leg, his claim to fame
Gently smiles and signs with care
A memento kept safe for many a year
Sixty league goals, all in one season
Will never be beaten, stands to reason
The greatest goal scorer ever seen
William Ralph or “Dixie” Dean

Notes

Everton supporters this month celebrated the 100th anniversary of the birth of “Dixie” Dean.

I am a Liverpudlian but I will take Bill Shankly’s word for it: “He belongs to the company of the supremely great … like Beethoven, Shakespeare and Rembrandt”.
