Top of The Table Forever

1 Leave a comment on verse 1 0 the stands are all creaking and peeling
the pitch it lies crumpled and torn
but like hoarding fanatics
left up in the attics
they are finally being reborn

2 Leave a comment on verse 2 0 some players stand legless and headless
the nets are all tangled up too
the players look small
to the size of the ball
and their arms smell of old Airfix glue

3 Leave a comment on verse 3 0 the tactics of adults and children
were dodgy and always the same
they left much to desire
by the table or fire
but were part of this magical game

4 Leave a comment on verse 4 0 now my son used to drag centre forwards
the length of the pitch in one go
the floodlights were rough
and were not bright enough
and the goalies were crazy I know

5 Leave a comment on verse 5 0 if a shot or a penalty happened
they would never just dive on ther own
they would carry the net
like a snail to the vet
on their backs as opponents would groan

6 Leave a comment on verse 6 0 we had new rules made up as we played it
there was never a top ref around
and the corner kick bloke
was a bit of a joke
you could flick him right out of the ground

7 Leave a comment on verse 7 0 and I’ll ponder those strips for a life time
and maybe I’ll never quite know
how Notts Forest away
was the kit of the day
but we lived for our Subbuteo

Notes

Just caught the tail end of comedian Arthur Smith on Radio 4 waxing lyrical about the wibbly world of Subbuteo and it’s current resurgence. Apparently we got to the Quarter Finals of the last World Cup and actually beat Germany on the way. Clear the table and bring it on. Who else had Pele, Charlton, Dixon, Best, Law ,Garrincha, Rush, Puskas, Banks,, Matthews and Maradona all in the same side?
