Total Football

1 Leave a comment on verse 1 0 They say Brazil in ’70 were the greatest ever team,
Aristocrats of subtlety and touch.
But for me, one side eclipsed them as the World Cup Finals cream –
The legendary Cruyff-inspired Dutch.

2 Leave a comment on verse 2 0 Nurtured from an early age, the kids grew into men,
Competing on the highest stage as such.
The awe-inspiring football lies beyond today’s kids’ ken –
They’ve never seen a team quite like the Dutch.

3 Leave a comment on verse 3 0 The scope of total football really blew our minds away,
We’d never seen the ball sprayed round so much.
They brought their team to Wembley and put on a great display,
With poor England quite bamboozled by the Dutch.

4 Leave a comment on verse 4 0 They failed to win the World Cup and quite how, we’ll never know,
The Germans staged a most unlikely putsch.
The football played so fluently made many juices flow,
And no-one did it better than the Dutch.

Notes

The first time I was ever blown away by a football team was the Dutch in the early seventies. The only team that have come near that since have been Liverpool in the early eighties.
In my opinion.
