Training Game

1 Leave a comment on verse 1 0 It was only a training game
with no nets and one working floodlight
and our coach, Graham, acting as ref
shouting his version of
encouragement.

2 Leave a comment on verse 2 0 It was only a training game as I stood
in goal, to guard not even a net,
it didn’t matter if I let them through
except to me it did
to me it’s always

3 Leave a comment on verse 3 0 real as the turf beneath
my feet, stronger than the
floodlight’s glare, and I’m not
me at all anymore
and I’m not really here.

4 Leave a comment on verse 4 0 I’m Gordon Banks and the weight
of the World Cup is one me,
I’m Petr Cech, proving everyone
wrong because it couldn’t keep me out,
I’m back

5 Leave a comment on verse 5 0 I’m Arthur Wharton
playing for more than
pride against prejudice,
playing for something that’s bigger
than any game

6 Leave a comment on verse 6 0 I’m not here because
I’m at Ashburton Grove
and we’re stuffing the Spurs
which is why I can’t concede
in this training game.
