Tribute to Derek Dooley

1 Leave a comment on verse 1 0 Derek Dooley

2 Leave a comment on verse 2 0 Now Sheffield is in mourning
A city is in tears
For an all time Sheffield legend
Respected throughout the years

3 Leave a comment on verse 3 0 He started off in blue and white
A young man full of skill
Scoring goals was so much fun
A real future to fulfil

4 Leave a comment on verse 4 0 And then there came a fateful day
For playing it was the end
But like the great he really was
He wasn’t beaten then

5 Leave a comment on verse 5 0 From pitch to boardroom he made the move
And took it in his stride
Respected throughout the football world
He bridged the Sheffield divide

6 Leave a comment on verse 6 0 Red and white and blue and white
All hold him in esteem
The only man to unite the fans
A football man supreme

7 Leave a comment on verse 7 0 A kindly man, a gent, a fan
A Sheffield lad through and through
A legend, but a humble man
Honest, straight and true

8 Leave a comment on verse 8 0 We’ve lost him now, but don’t forget
The man that walked round here,
His goals, his stature, our city’s son,
We’ll always hold him dear

9 Leave a comment on verse 9 0 And so, Derek Dooley, you left your mark
Your passing is so sad,
But generations revere your name,
You’re a legend, you Sheffield lad.

Notes

Written after the passing of Derek Dooley – a forward for SWFC, whose goal scoring career was cut tragically short by a broken leg, which he later had to have amputated. He went back to manage SWFC, and was unceremoniously sacked. Years later he came to SUFC, where he was chairman of the club eventually – a real Sheffield football giant.
