Watching England v Paint (Tough Choice)

1 Leave a comment on verse 1 0 they’re all assembled in their shirts
and everybody’s here
down at the Oak the fags have gone
the room just smells of beer

2 Leave a comment on verse 2 0 there’s nothing here to lift the gloom
they’re all on best behaviour
no Stevie , Sven or flip flops now
we toast our great new saviour

3 Leave a comment on verse 3 0 but nothing’s changed we’re still the same
with Scowlio Capello
you can’t squeeze blood out of a stone
the barman’s reading Hello

4 Leave a comment on verse 4 0 I said to Rik above the moans
and worn out fed up voices
“when it comes to squads and stuff
we just don’t have the choices ! ”

5 Leave a comment on verse 5 0 but week on week in cup or league
in grounds and pubs and bars
we all forget how few we have
seduced by foreign stars

6 Leave a comment on verse 6 0 I held that roller in my hand
I’d finished half the hall
I’d put it off for weeks and months
to go and watch football

7 Leave a comment on verse 7 0 the Champions League The FA Cup
the Big Four Premier Yawn
the Grand Slam Sunday – Mondays too
is this why we were born?

8 Leave a comment on verse 8 0 I’d swap my brush for club and team
without a second thought
but watching England versus Paint
would be my last resort

9 Leave a comment on verse 9 0 at least with paint you get results
it’s brighter in the end
it feels new but watching you
it drives me round the bend

10 Leave a comment on verse 10 0 they’re all assembled in their shirts
and everybody’s here
to put our faith in Fabio
but we’re still pants it’s clear

Notes

Football v DIY ?
i can’t believe how many times , just about every weekend, I’ve put off finishing that second coat on the hall , to go and watch a game . Premiership, Conference, Championship, FA Cup ,Carling ,Champions League .The excitement, the vibe, the skill, the passion, the crowds..OK – admittedly 90% of the time in a pub (I don’t have Sky ).Actually , come to think of it , I don’t drink either…”J-20 please (he said softly) “…yeah Apple and Mango mate..no I tell you what ..it’s England – make that a sugar-free Red-Bull..I’m feeling lucky!” Amazing. So is it just me, but how come whenever I watch England, it’s more depressing and rock bottom than London in a Dickens novel? Great Expectations ..great disappointments I guess. Still at least when it’s packed ,you can still stand up in The British Oak , our local in Stroud.
The most exciting bit during the France-England “training session” was when my mate Rik managed to put his pint down on the floor ..in the only hole in the pub.. and somehow catch it as it was disappearing into the void.. Great save Rik.. You could play for England mate.
