WC 2006 : Day 03

1 Leave a comment on verse 1 0 For those not there

2 Leave a comment on verse 2 0 A father dies
A son weeps
A Nation mourns

3 Leave a comment on verse 3 0 The son buries his father
The Nation prays
Football adjourns

4 Leave a comment on verse 4 0 But resumes with inordinate haste
Too many chances go to waste
Mexico struggle
But unlike the revolution
Their shots soon hit the target –
They reach 3-1 and relax
The crowd follows suit
And ring out with …
Olé, olé, olé, o-lé, olé
And in another land
Of emerald hue
Lives the green-eyed monster –
That’s our adopted tune
We should be there
Singing it with gusto and glee
Pasting the opposition
And triumphing merrily

5 Leave a comment on verse 5 0 But instead we look on
And from a distance, we share
In the joy of the Beautiful Game
But also relate to the tears
For the man who never got there

Notes

For Oswaldo Sanchez and his family

Felipe Sanchez died on Wednesday 7th June as he was preparing to jet out to the World Cup to proudly support his son in the Mexican goal.

The players were joined in their grief by the entire Mexican nation, with President Vicente Fox also conveying a message of support to the player. The president’s statement read: “I would like to offer my most sincere condolences for the untimely death of your father, Felipe Sanchez Carmona, a man who nurtured your love for sport and your country.”

Bravely, Oswaldo Sanchez played for Mexico today, and the emotion of the occasion was all too obvious, as each Mexican squad member joined Sanchez for congratulatory yet commiserative hug at the end of the game.
