1 Leave a comment on verse 1 0 First game : South Korea v Togo

2 Leave a comment on verse 2 0 1400 BST: Referee Graham Poll celebrates his wedding anniversary by blowing the whistle to start the match – at the exact moment he got married 14 years ago.

3 Leave a comment on verse 3 0 Oh I bet she’s happy!

4 Leave a comment on verse 4 0 Mrs whistle blower, was probably as proud as punch
when told over lunch, that hubby had the World Cup
gig. Who knows, she may even have danced a jig,

5 Leave a comment on verse 5 0 having just dined on pig. She may have delighted in
all that talk, over pork. Perhaps even popped a cork
and celebrated with champagne, at hubbys participation

6 Leave a comment on verse 6 0 in the forthcoming campaign. But I bet his life wasn’t
worth a sausage, when after a game at the Cottage,
his agenda came to light. In fact, I suggest his gender

7 Leave a comment on verse 7 0 didn’t look too bright! Bet he slept guardedly that night!
Or maybe, I do Mrs Poll a disservice. Maybe Graham
had no need to be nervous. Perhaps she’s resigned

8 Leave a comment on verse 8 0 to his absence from home. Maybe he’ll cheer her up
with a poem. He certainly didn’t let the occasion go
to waste, when, with over exuberant haste, he gave

9 Leave a comment on verse 9 0 us all a giggle, reaching for top pocket with a jiggle
and produced red before yellow – he was obviously
too excited to be mellow. Just as well the players

10 Leave a comment on verse 10 0 then behaved, that none became depraved, for if
anyone had gone in too hard – the next brandishment
might have been the wifes anniversary card!

11 Leave a comment on verse 11 0 PS –
I bet she’s very insistent
Never to be called a referees assistant!

Notes

I thought I’d imagined it, until it was confirmed later in the highlights show.
When sending off a Togo player, Graham Poll brandished the red card
before the second yellow.
I’m sure he’ll never live it down among his fellow referees!

Tuesday 13th June

South Korea 2 0 Togo
France 0 0 Switzerland
Brazil 1 0 Croatia

Is Mr Lineker trying to join our ranks?
(This one is very dependant on how you pronounce the surname!)

“So Brazil win, with a cracker – from Kaka!”

(Personally, I thought it was pronounced Ka-car)
