WC 2006 : Day 27

1 Leave a comment on verse 1 0 France 1 0 Portugal Semi-Final

2 Leave a comment on verse 2 0 From the very first bars, of
the rousing ‘La Marseillaise’
the French had that extra oomph
that sense of purpose, of poise
and so it was no surprise, that the noise
of les Gauls, was super ‘grande’
et le Coup du Monde
given the way they play
could be heading home
à la Jules Rimet

3 Leave a comment on verse 3 0 Heroes?
Gallas & Thuram – like granite and mortar
gave no quarter
and sitting in front of them – the cement mixer
that was Makalele – building
an impenetratable wall
flanked
by the sanguine Sagnol
the pebble-dashing Abidal
and the cornerstone: Vieira
Up front, Henry thrust
and Ribery parried
Malouda marauded
and Zizou married
skill, nerve
va-va-voom and verve
to fashion a finish
that could not be diminished –

4 Leave a comment on verse 4 0 by the villains;
Barthez the clown
over up, under down
but never cleanly clutched
and ditto Ronaldo
doing his bird impressions :
swallow, dying swan, ballerina
then finally: tearful dumpy diva

Notes

Thierry Henry wins a penalty :

Zinedine Zidane converts.
