1 Leave a comment on verse 1 0 Match Day 20
Friday 2nd July:

2 Leave a comment on verse 2 0 Netherlands 2 Brazil 1
Missed it!

3 Leave a comment on verse 3 0 Uruguay 1 Ghana 1
Uruguay win 4-2 on penalties

4 Leave a comment on verse 4 0 Suarez lays claim
To deified limb
Africa aghast
Their faces grim

5 Leave a comment on verse 5 0 Gyan grits
Nervous teeth
But skies the ball
No laurel wreath

6 Leave a comment on verse 6 0 And that was
The very last kick
A continent gasps
Now worried sick

7 Leave a comment on verse 7 0 The shootout ensues
And Gyan scores
Is he redeemed
Amidst the roars?

8 Leave a comment on verse 8 0 Unfortunately no
As drama grips
And ice-cool Abreu
Deftly chips …

9 Leave a comment on verse 9 0 Match Day 21

10 Leave a comment on verse 10 0 Germany 4 Argentina 0

11 Leave a comment on verse 11 0 Özil oozes class
Schweinsteiger pulls the strings
Deutschland uber Argies

12 Leave a comment on verse 12 0 Messi muscled out
Tempo, pace, aggression
Four without reply

13 Leave a comment on verse 13 0 Match Day 22 : Semi-Final 1

14 Leave a comment on verse 14 0 Uruguay 2 Holland 3

15 Leave a comment on verse 15 0 Where to watch
How to watch
And who to watch with?

16 Leave a comment on verse 16 0 Center Parcs sports Bar
in the company of many

17 Leave a comment on verse 17 0 All of us neutrals
All up for entertainment
Hoping for open play
Not too much containment

18 Leave a comment on verse 18 0 We got the goals
And the buzz
And we all roared
As one does

19 Leave a comment on verse 19 0 But unbelievably, I missed four of the goals!
Yet how could that be?
Just why was it
That I didn’t see?

20 Leave a comment on verse 20 0 A distraction here, a distraction there
A waitress obscuring, yet unaware
And a young child’s cry
Averting my eye

21 Leave a comment on verse 21 0 (Though not my own –
She was in the climbing zone)

22 Leave a comment on verse 22 0 Match Day 23 : Semi-Final 2

23 Leave a comment on verse 23 0 Germany 0 Spain 1

24 Leave a comment on verse 24 0 Where to watch
How to watch
And who to watch with?

25 Leave a comment on verse 25 0 How delightful
To join the insightful!

26 Leave a comment on verse 26 0 A very first meeting
A pity so fleeting

27 Leave a comment on verse 27 0 With Stuart and Basil
The verbal skills dazzle

28 Leave a comment on verse 28 0 With Crispin in the corner
Solecism the mourner

29 Leave a comment on verse 29 0 And as to the game
We proudly proclaim

30 Leave a comment on verse 30 0 They’ll miss Muelller
As Stoke would Fuller

31 Leave a comment on verse 31 0 And all that pretty passing
Is rightly outclassing

32 Leave a comment on verse 32 0 Teutonic efficiency –
Bested by Iberian proficiency

33 Leave a comment on verse 33 0 And we all remarked
While Basil barked

34 Leave a comment on verse 34 0 Would it be just too existentialist
To hanker after a free-kick specialist

35 Leave a comment on verse 35 0 what a pleasure to finally meet Stuart and Crispin (& Basil!) in person! It’s taken 10 years!

36 Leave a comment on verse 36 0 Match Day 24 : 3rd and 4th place Playoff

37 Leave a comment on verse 37 0 Germany 3 Uruguay 2

38 Leave a comment on verse 38 0 Where to watch
How to watch
And who to watch with?

39 Leave a comment on verse 39 0 Or even – bother to watch at all?
How about –
Our own game of football?!?!

40 Leave a comment on verse 40 0 And so to West Wittering
And an impromptu game on the beach
Where one side of the family
Beat the others out of reach !

41 Leave a comment on verse 41 0 Champions of the World?
Well, at least Champions of the clan…
Comprising the portly, the chortley
And the unabashed fan!

42 Leave a comment on verse 42 0 Yet we had no contenders
For third or fourth spot
So I guess Grandma and Grandpa
Edge out Auntie Dot!

43 Leave a comment on verse 43 0 And then after an evening of sun and fun
A return to catch the match
And though it was exciting….
Did it measure up to ours? Not a patch!

44 Leave a comment on verse 44 0 (You’ll just have to take our word for it!! 🙂

45 Leave a comment on verse 45 0 Match Day 25 : The World Cup FINAL!

46 Leave a comment on verse 46 0 Spain 1 Holland 0

47 Leave a comment on verse 47 0 Where to watch
How to watch
And who to watch with?

48 Leave a comment on verse 48 0 Where better
Than with your best pal!
And his delightful ensemble
à la Luca and Hal !

49 Leave a comment on verse 49 0 Such a pleasant welcome
With warmth in the greeting
Alas to say
So pitiably fleeting

50 Leave a comment on verse 50 0 And so to give dues
To our location
A summary ode
As invocation …

51 Leave a comment on verse 51 0 Drive a crocked car to Banbury Cross
To see a fine team inflict a deep loss
With passes to feet and skills galore
Spain lift the trophy to a mighty roar!

Ride a cock horse to Banbury Cross
To see a fine lady upon a white horse
With rings on her fingers and bells on her toes
She shall have music wherever she goes
