WC2014: Day 15 thru 22

1 Leave a comment on verse 1 0 Day 15

2 Leave a comment on verse 2 0 By Zeus!
Zusi goes close!
Klose closer.
Mueller marauds
crowd applauds
Germany gemmiferous.

3 Leave a comment on verse 3 0 Ronaldo reneges
on a hat-full of chances
the boy wonder
torn asunder
at opportunities missed –
there’s no twist
of goal bonanza
for a storming stanza!

9 Leave a comment on verse 9 0 Day 16 : Rest Day

10 Leave a comment on verse 10 0 Rest Day. Wot, no matches? Cor, strike a light!

11 Leave a comment on verse 11 0 Quality, Quality, Quality
And I’m not talking ‘bout Eng-er-land
but the gifted poet
with perfect beat
who has words rolled up into a ball
and runs with them at their feet
all under total control
each pass measured, much like the metre
each hero / villain / unknown all tackled
with the full might
of Iambic Pentameter (a sub somewhere surely?!)
each strike at goal
captured with a couplet
each thudding challenge
hacked-up with haiku
every save glorified in heavily gloved stanzas
and every winning game
celebrated with a lyrical laurel
pity then that England
draw neither
quotation nor quarrel!

Costa Rica 1 – 1 Greece, Costa Rica win on pens

27 Leave a comment on verse 27 0 Day 19

28 Leave a comment on verse 28 0 In the first half Germany were contained
and so parity was retained
after the break we expected more
but in 90 minutes couldn’t score

29 Leave a comment on verse 29 0 Boli played a blinder
a nifty net minder
whereas Neuer played sweeper
rarely needed as a keeper

30 Leave a comment on verse 30 0 then straight away in extra time
a goal but no possibility to rhyme
schurlle, not a curler
for it was a reverse heeled finish

31 Leave a comment on verse 31 0 in the end, a touch of Teutonic quality told
and so revenge for the Desert Foxes, has to go on hold

32 Leave a comment on verse 32 0 at the last, Ozil puts them to the sword
last 8 v France is the reward

33 Leave a comment on verse 33 0
Sunday June 29th

36 Leave a comment on verse 36 0 Day 20

37 Leave a comment on verse 37 0 The Swiss ran down the clock
Tick tock

38 Leave a comment on verse 38 0 The Swiss ran down the clock
Quick block
Where required
All over the pitch
They all tired

39 Leave a comment on verse 39 0 The Swiss ran down the clock
Kick flock
And we watched with breath bated
Our addiction sated

40 Leave a comment on verse 40 0 The Swiss ran down the clock
and then pick pock…
before you could even finish the word
the master of the last third
popped up like a cuckoo
grabbed the ball
skipped through tackles
and set up di Maria
game over
the Swiss – sick to their socks

41 Leave a comment on verse 41 0 ~ # ~

42 Leave a comment on verse 42 0 Initially, sentiment was swayed
Against the U-S-A
What with their brogadaccio
And the way they say
‘Pay-lay’
With reference
But no deference
To the greatest ever.

43 Leave a comment on verse 43 0 But, kudos, respect –
By the end of the game
When most were lame, with cramp
Our eyes nearly damp
With emotion
And respect
At their constant motion

44 Leave a comment on verse 44 0 So kudos
To the home of the brave
Tim Howard with save after save
And the land of the free –
With the best set-piece of the tournament
Adios, U-S-A

45 Leave a comment on verse 45 0
Tuesday July 1st

46 Leave a comment on verse 46 0 Argentina 1 – 0 Switzerlad, Argentina win with a last minute goal – and yet, the Swiss still missed a sitter!
Belgium 2 – 1 USA

47 Leave a comment on verse 47 0 ~ # ~

48 Leave a comment on verse 48 0 Day 21 : Rest Day

49 Leave a comment on verse 49 0 I’m looking for the joins
where skill, fortitude and character
meld, into a winning formula

50 Leave a comment on verse 50 0 I’m looking between the gaps
to satisfy myself that
two banks of four, are impenetratable

51 Leave a comment on verse 51 0 I’m looking behind the lines
concentrating my thoughts on the custodian
will he be quids in, by saving penalties?

52 Leave a comment on verse 52 0 But most of all

53 Leave a comment on verse 53 0 I’m looking up top
to see the leaders, the movers, the shakers
and ultimately, the possible / probable goal takers

54 Leave a comment on verse 54 0 ~ # ~

55 Leave a comment on verse 55 0 Day 22 : Rest Day

56 Leave a comment on verse 56 0 If I sampled Miley Cyrus
I’d have to get twerking

57 Leave a comment on verse 57 0 And if I sampled Fred
I’d be too sexy for my yellow samba’d shirt

58 Leave a comment on verse 58 0 But if I sampled Messi
Responsibility is something I’d never be shirking

59 Leave a comment on verse 59 0 And if I could only sample Pelé
We’d soon end thirty years of hurt!

60 Leave a comment on verse 60 0 Sugar! Time has rolled on
And then some!
48 years! But it’s still 3 Lions that –
We despairingly hum!
