the first real piece of magic in Brazil.
They’re going to show van Persie’s goal for years.

2 Leave a comment on verse 2 0 Mis-hit shots have caused ironic jeers.
The penalties have been a bitter pill.
But now a goal to raise the neutrals’ cheers.

3 Leave a comment on verse 3 0 Suddenly the ennui disappears
as Holland’s captain dives in for the kill.
They’re going to show van Persie’s goal for years.

4 Leave a comment on verse 4 0 The Netherlands weren’t too long in arrears
as Ramos was left trailing, standing still,
for the goal that raised the neutrals’ cheers.

5 Leave a comment on verse 5 0 The Dutchman ascends right through the gears
and silences the faithful in Seville,
where they won’t watch van Persie’s goal for years.

6 Leave a comment on verse 6 0 Spain are crushed, their fans reduced to tears
as Holland seem to hit the net at will,
sparked by a goal to raise the neutral’s cheers.

7 Leave a comment on verse 7 0 The Dutch fans will enjoy their post-match beers
while toasting that outrageous piece of skill.
They’re going to show van Persie’s goal for years.

8 Leave a comment on verse 8 0 Blue sky at last! The steady rainfall clears.
The Games had not kicked off at all until
there came that goal to raise the neutral’s cheers,
van Persie’s goal, which they will show for years.

Was it Germany who got hit for 8 in their first game in the 1954 World Cup and then went on to win it? A warning for those who have written off Spain!
