WC2014: Day 27

1 Leave a comment on verse 1 0 Brazil 1 – 7 Germany

2 Leave a comment on verse 2 0 Shaken Sonnet

3 Leave a comment on verse 3 0 Beyond the Bounds of Belief!
And the crowd are stricken with grief
the Seleçao shown to have too many flaws
as the Germans are profligate with their scores!
they drive through big open spaces
leaving egg all over Brazilian faces
the Germans a well-oiled juggernaut
as they steam into the onslaught
and they implausibly end up in heaven
inflicting hell on the hosts, as they tally seven!
for the hordes on the streets, in the favelas
there is much consternation
for the fans, the players
there can be no consolation

4 Leave a comment on verse 4 0 Big Phil – belittled
soon to find – his job – ‘whittled’

5 Leave a comment on verse 5 0 ~ # ~

6 Leave a comment on verse 6 0 The writing was on the wall? It is now!
Expletive after expletive, ‘bombed’ over the whitewash of ‘7-1’
Tagged with ‘Mineirazo’ –
the new watchword, replacing their 60 years of hurt (‘Maracanazo’)

7 Leave a comment on verse 7 0 But with all their wailing and gnashing of teeth
And introspection
The rest of the world still wishes to be….
BRAZIL
(circa nineteen-seven-tee!)

8 Leave a comment on verse 8 0 ~ # ~

9 Leave a comment on verse 9 0 Humiliation
Hosts humbled pitilessly
Teutonic whitewash

10 Leave a comment on verse 10 0 ~ # ~

11 Leave a comment on verse 11 0 There’s a torrent of abuse
Raining down from the favelas
The force of which
Threatens to demolish
The very foundation of Brazil

12 Leave a comment on verse 12 0 Until now
‘Shantyism’ was tolerated
Because of the ‘libero’ effect –
Where individualism was lauded
And a mezzanine of maestros fostered

13 Leave a comment on verse 13 0 But gentrification
Has swept in and unhinged
The hunger and replaced it
With an undeserved hubris –
‘Mundanity uber alles’!

14 Leave a comment on verse 14 0 Beach football
Is where their champions
Still kick sand in the faces of others
And futsal
Hot-houses the talent

15 Leave a comment on verse 15 0 The glistening torsos
Posing on the Copacabana
Tip tap to a backdrop
Of Christ the Redeemer
And a globalised workforce

16 Leave a comment on verse 16 0 But to get themselves back
Into the stockbroker belt
They must now build afresh
Where their history must underpin
Any empirical pile

17 Leave a comment on verse 17 0 ~ # ~

18 Leave a comment on verse 18 0 Sugar Loaf observes
Statue to come into play
Redemption required

19 Leave a comment on verse 19 0 ~ # ~

20 Leave a comment on verse 20 0 Sub off Fred
To sub on Jo
Take as read
Status quo!

Notes

8th July 2014

Semi-Final 1

Brazil 1 – 7 Germany

unbelievable capitulation!

It will be talked about for along, long time

FYI
Fred was substituted – to a cacophony of boos – it wasn’t his fault, but he was completely out of his depth.

Jo did not come on for Fred, but did in previous matches – he was just as much out of his depth too.
