WC2014 Day 5 Germany 4 Portugal 0

1 Leave a comment on verse 1 0 Ronaldo seemed a bit subdued –
he didn’t seem pumped up, imbued
by a sense of greater magnitude.
A bandage tight and long
round one of his knees,
we sensed things might go wrong
for the Portuguese.

2 Leave a comment on verse 2 0 Twelve minutes gone, a needless tug.
The hole had started getting dug.
Müller squared up with a shrug.
He struck it firm and strong,
yet with great ease
and it started going wrong
for the Portuguese.

3 Leave a comment on verse 3 0 A corner ball whipped in for fun,
designed to get more damage done.
Hummels smartly timed his run.
His header did not disperse
their frailties
and things got a whole lot worse
for the Portuguese.

4 Leave a comment on verse 4 0 Pepe strayed and Müller pounced
and Pepe flailed and Müller bounced
and Müller cried and Pepe flounced.
Acts like that don’t belong
on our TVs –
when things go wrong, they go wrong
for the Portuguese.

5 Leave a comment on verse 5 0 Müller then bagged three and four
to ratchet up a cricket score,
then eased up (could have had much more)
They didn’t pass and move,
didn’t sting like bees
but things can only improve
for the Portuguese.
