1 Leave a comment on verse 1 0 Don’t blame Iran for battening the hatches –
it’s not with them the blame for this attaches.
Champions of Africa, they told us,
and lots of expectation on their shoulders.
Small wonder, then, they only played in patches.

2 Leave a comment on verse 2 0 Poor delivered cross. The keeper catches.
This will not be highlighted in despatches.
If this is some strange pup the World Cup sold us
don’t blame Iran.

3 Leave a comment on verse 3 0 Ghoochanejhad runs through and nearly snatches
a victory for fleet-of-foot Apaches.
Around the world the interest scarcely smoulders
for neither will end up as World Cup holders,
but, if this was the dreariest of matches,
don’t blame Iran.
