WC2014 Day11 Portugal 2 USA 2

1 Leave a comment on verse 1 0 Seconds away from the final sixteen,
what a wonderful fairy tale it would have been.
We thought that the golden boy had split the scene
but it seems that he was only waiting.
We stared dumbfounded at the television screen
watching Portugal celebrating.

2 Leave a comment on verse 2 0 We’d written him off with his Portuguese mates,
declared that he’d never be one of the greats
if his team couldn’t march through the Last Sixteen Gates.
His self-esteem needed deflating.
The world felt so sorry for the United States
watching Portugal celebrating.

3 Leave a comment on verse 3 0 It would have been one of the shock World Cup losses
but we had discounted the Madeiran colossus
who picked out Varela with the finest of crosses.
For the Yanks, it was excruciating.
We needed reminding just who the real boss is,
watching Portugal celebrating.

4 Leave a comment on verse 4 0 They salvaged a draw in the ninety fifth minute.
They were on the plane home but now they’re still in it.
It’s about how you end it, not how you begin it –
Oh what headlines they are creating!
Where the bottle will stop depends how hard you spin it
and now Portugal are celebrating.
