We Woz Doing Alright….

1 Leave a comment on verse 1 0 On that schlep to the North*
In a hire coach our club had laid on
What with birds singing songs
To silence blokes, though more coarse
Our venture Northward did soon sail along.

2 Leave a comment on verse 2 0 As we spied other fans
Through coach winders
Making their way to The South
We gave them a Churchill sign via our hands*
Followed by a solitary finger
Whilst belting our songs out aloud.

3 Leave a comment on verse 3 0 Settling down to scan the days papers
We could see
Our teams task would be tough
By dire journalese of back pages
From those hacks
Who berated and slated our love.

4 Leave a comment on verse 4 0 Sony walkmans and the radio
Blared out aloud
Soothing minds for the forthcoming fray
As we whistled then booed
When both teams were announced
and discovered our saviour wern’t playing.

5 Leave a comment on verse 5 0 When we paused
At a motorway station
To be mugged for a tea and some toast
We had cause
For loads more irritation
On being told that the toilets were closed.

6 Leave a comment on verse 6 0 At a pub
In the middle of nowhere
Where the locals ate gravy and chips
We pulled up
Un-announced to be treated right fair
Legs crossed, in dire need of a hit and a miss.

7 Leave a comment on verse 7 0 Back on the road
Somewhat relieved
Our journey came to it’s conclusion
As the displeasure showed
On those faces we’d seen
In the home crowd outside local boozers.

8 Leave a comment on verse 8 0 Those kind of days
Whether home or away
Were days us real fans have now lost
Though in closing this rhyme
A particular day stays in mind
As going North, a mere minute past kick off!

Notes

The above poem consists of bits and pieces taken from great memories of those never to be forgotten days spent going up and down the motorways of England and Wales by any means necessary following me team, what ever the weather where ever and whom ever they played, me and hundreds of thousands of others like me were out there, stood on the terraces giving it our all.

Which to me is what being a real fan has always been about.

Schlep is the Yiddish word for labour.

A Churchill is another description for the two fingered V for Victory sign made famous by Sir Winstone Churchill during The Second World War, though in the context of the above poem, it has another meaning!

A hit and a miss is Cockney slang for a….use your imagination!

Peace
