1 Leave a comment on verse 1 0 Espied an old face at yesterdays match
One that I’d not seen for ages
He came from the days before crazy contracts,
Or exorbitant high players wages!

2 Leave a comment on verse 2 0 In days when the gates were it seemed fit to burst
With the working class faithful en masse
Halcyon match days sound great looking back
Have the changes they’ve made, made game worse?

3 Leave a comment on verse 3 0 When this face was en vogue, we walked the Kings Road
And knew every star who played for our team
Some days we’d score goals with finesse in shed loads
Some days drawing blanks, we’d run out of steam!

4 Leave a comment on verse 4 0 “I know the next rhyme; today’s ticket prices a crime
You had Hovis and soup for yer tea”.
You may scoff if you like but in those golden times
The face turned up each week for young kids like me.

5 Leave a comment on verse 5 0 When eleven hero’s endured every knock
For an hour and a half every week
If you went down to ten with an injury then
You just dug in, and turned the other cheek.

6 Leave a comment on verse 6 0 I don’t want to sound like an old moaner
You know… the Bovril tasted much better then
But yesterdays first match gives me hope
That this season will rekindle the flame

7 Leave a comment on verse 7 0 That B’ham City came to play us and go for it
Speaks volumes for them as a team
Mores the pity they’ve got nothing to show it
Except the rise in their fans loyal esteem.

8 Leave a comment on verse 8 0 This face was everywhere, all over the pitch
In fair play, scoring goals, till full time came
So with both arms open wide, a welcome back ending this
To the old wizened face of… ninety minutes pure entertainment!

Notes

Chelsea vesus B’ham City yesterday at The Bridge of sighs of…relief was a cracking opening match and could easily have ended up at ten goals to four on another day!

A great pointer for the new season?

I blimmin well hope so!
