What I got for Christmas

1 Leave a comment on verse 1 0 “What did you get for Christmas?”
“What did Santa bring this year?”
Such questions more than once these last few days
I’ve chanced to hear.

2 Leave a comment on verse 2 0 And when I’m thus put on the spot,
I turn all misty-eyed.
Pull out a tear-stained hanky
And then wistfully reply:

3 Leave a comment on verse 3 0 “I got a set of cuff-links,
A long, warm woolen scarf.
A Chaplin film on video
Designed to make me laugh.

4 Leave a comment on verse 4 0 A couple of book tokens,
A heavy duty sweater.
Some fancy writing paper
Just right for my lengthy letters.

5 Leave a comment on verse 5 0 A wallet and a key-ring,
Six bottles of red wine.
(That came as no real great surprise,
Got six of white last time).

6 Leave a comment on verse 6 0 A pocket calculator,
‘Cos I’m not too good at maths.
A plastic duck for playing with
When stretched out in my bath.

7 Leave a comment on verse 7 0 A hammer and a chisel,
A plane, a drill, a saw.
So I can do some DIY
Whenever I feel bored.

8 Leave a comment on verse 8 0 A pair of pink pyjamas,
A dressing gown to match.
A hairbrush and a fine-tooth comb
To tend my thinning thatch.

9 Leave a comment on verse 9 0 Some chopsticks, cups and rice-bowls,
A teflon-coated wok.
And, finally, some underpants
To add to my rich stock.

10 Leave a comment on verse 10 0 Yes, I received all these nice gifts,
Which I’ll not throw away.
But there’s one thing I did not get:
Three points on Derby Day…”

Notes

Perhaps I am asking too much, but in order to appreciate this, one should be familiar with my earlier poem entitled All I want for Christmas.
