What is it about football?

1 Leave a comment on verse 1 0
“All you need is – love …
Love is all you need …
All you need is …”

repetition, perhaps
“She loves you yeh yeh yeh …”
The Fab Four had it so right
with their lyrics
they were spot on
about mankind’s needs and desires
about our homosapien capacity for feeling;
but what is it, that has the majority reeling?
this study of combatants
usually men by ten
plus a madman.
And they could be any body of ten (plus one)
as long as
they all wear the same crest
upon their chest
and perform admirably
week in, week out
for their admirers

2 Leave a comment on verse 2 0 it’s not homoeroticism
nor homophobia
at play here;
it’s a shared love
for more than a game –
a way of life
of seeing, of believing
of excelling
of competing, contesting, coping, struggling
of striving
for a shared goal
for betterment
for an all-round improvement
perhaps even
a denouement

3 Leave a comment on verse 3 0 it’s like nothing on earth really
except perhaps familial love
All together now
We love you yeh yeh yeh

Notes

With apologies to the Beatles
