What’s So Funny ‘Bout Promotion and Relegation?

1 Leave a comment on verse 1 0 Since Adam first played three-and-in
Against a hapless Eve,
You gained if you achieved a win,
For losing – no reprieve.
This is the One and Holy Law
Delaney seeks to underscore,
Oh, what’s so funny ‘bout promotion and relegation?

2 Leave a comment on verse 2 0 This Holy Law of football begs
Your fate depends on merit.
No scurrying up trouser legs
Like some demented ferret.
It’s always been, it always will,
Without some biased codicil,
Oh, what’s so funny ‘bout promotion and relegation?

3 Leave a comment on verse 3 0 To join the Premier League elite,
You win the First Division.
You don’t achieve this massive feat
Through fawning and petition.
Everyone’s of one accord,
Success should bring it’s own reward,
Oh, what’s so funny ‘bout promotion and relegation?

4 Leave a comment on verse 4 0 And if you’re on the bottom rung,
You take the consequences.
Down to the First Division flung,
When Holy Law dispenses.
History, or size of gate,
Should never pre-determine fate,
Oh, what’s so funny ‘bout promotion and relegation?

5 Leave a comment on verse 5 0 But now we have no need of God,
Delaney is our Saviour.
Reputation gets the nod
O’er footballing behaviour.
Beware, lest Sodom and Gomorrah
Crumble to the ground tomorrah,
Oh, what’s so funny ‘bout promotion and relegation?

Notes

As the Eircom League and the FAI merge, the new governing body has decided that this season there will be no automatic promotion and relegation, but other factors will be taken into account to determine next season’s set-up, size of gate, reputation, facilities etc
