When England Take On Uruguay (for football poets)

1 Leave a comment on verse 1 0 when England take on Uruguay
no time to hold our breath
no place to wonder how or why
this isn’t life or death
we’ve come this far together
the moment’s drawing nye
let’s be inspired alive and fired
by Rik Mayall’s battle cry*

2 Leave a comment on verse 2 0 these poems underline our love
they roll in like the sea
I cannot edit more today
it’s focus time for me
forget this crazy life we lead
this work we do each day
our ‘normal’ world is all hold
we’ll keep it all at bay
we’ve swapped our shirts with Shakespeare
we’ve written all we can
we’ve been here since Two Thousand**
woman child and man
for those if us in Ireland
for those of us in Stroud
it doesn’t matter where we are
you’ll hear us clear and loud
for those out in Toronto or Delhi on some hill
In London Bristol Reading too
for David in Brazil
It doesn’t matter where we are
in Paris or Zimbabwe
a café bar in Liverpool
for Albert in Harare
we’ve been here many times before
the pain we felt back then
like Stevie says ..it’s something we
don’t wanna feel again
arise as one the moment’s here
like life to seize and love
to cast off all our silly doubts
to somehow rise above
above above the madness
let all those fears destroy
big up your expectations
for England and Saint Roy

3 Leave a comment on verse 3 0 we’ve come this far together
the moment’s drawing nye
we rise as Young and Old Ones
to Rik Mayall’s battle cry
these poems underline our love
they roll in like the sea
no more “where should we play our Wayne?”
it’s on to victory…
