When Saturday Comes!

1 Leave a comment on verse 1 0 Through narrow streets and winding lanes
We’d walk through noon day sun
To where working class men, boy’s and maids
Spent Saturday afternoons for fun

2 Leave a comment on verse 2 0 “Read all about it’s” on the air
“The latest football news”
We’d scan the sports page’s avidly
For Brian Glanville’s views

3 Leave a comment on verse 3 0 Rosettes and scarves and wooden rattles
Adorn the young and old
Better take a Fisherman’s Friend
To ward off flu and colds

4 Leave a comment on verse 4 0 Police horses divide the blooming crowd
Toward “Home, Away team” signs
As other team were well supported at every game
Another part of street’s assigned

5 Leave a comment on verse 5 0 “Get yer programme’s here” is yelled
By a booming cockney voice
Whilst tickets for the Irish Sweepstakes
Promise dreams of wealth by choice

6 Leave a comment on verse 6 0 “Roast peanuts, Roast peanuts”
In tiny paper bags, are offered to the mingling mass
By a young fellow stood beneath a hoarding
Advertising Olde Holborn roll up fags

7 Leave a comment on verse 7 0 Turnstiles clicking quickly
Admit brightly coloured hordes
As “The End Is Nigh” is signified at gates to stadium
By blokes with six foot boards

8 Leave a comment on verse 8 0 Grey somber streets are bought to life
As floodlights light the sky
Like a microcosm to just that wondrous place
That was dazzling to the eye

9 Leave a comment on verse 9 0 We donned our bobble hats and pac-a-macs
Our rattles clacked, as the teams took to the pitch
In those days of so called abject poverty
Such football memories make us rich!

Notes

Pure nostalgia or what!

I’ve been chilling out on a longboat on the canal for two weeks and listening to some cracking music at a hippy folk festival for three days of that time and it’s inspired me to write this sort of laid back stuff from yesteryear!

Memories are made of this are they not?

Back to work and harsh reality tomorrow. I’m really looking forward to it!

Yeah right!

peace.

kev.
