When That First Whistle Blows.

1 Leave a comment on verse 1 0 When that first whistle blows
The inner me knows
Something exciting could happen
A slick Zola flick
A wee Patsy trick
George Best going solo, Northampton.

2 Leave a comment on verse 2 0 De Canio scoring straight from a throw in
After flicking it, over his shoulder
I stood up and applauded, full knowing
Silent home fans, gave me looks out of order.

3 Leave a comment on verse 3 0 Denis Law, when he sent down United
With a beautifully executed back heeled goal
Then looking away, from ex-team mates, sad eyes caste down
As tears welled up, in the back of his throat.

4 Leave a comment on verse 4 0 Paolo Rossi so slight and incisive
Leading Forza Azzuri to another World Cup
Enzo Berzot’s selection decisive
Despite Rossi, tis said being corrupt.

5 Leave a comment on verse 5 0 The ecstacy of Marco Tardelli
So powerful that words can’t describe
A sight so inspiring as a man lives his dream
On a quite un-forgettable night.

6 Leave a comment on verse 6 0 The tears of Diego, Gentile
Patrick Battiston, or The Butcher of Bilbao
Emilio Butregeano, Alfredo Di-Stefano
Ference Puskas, Jim Baxter, Tostao.

7 Leave a comment on verse 7 0 The feats of the great Raymond Kopa
Gert Mueller, Rivelino, Little Bird
Uwe Zeeler, Pak Doo Ik, Franco Gento
Gaetano Scirea, Zbiggy Boniek, and Geoff (hatrick) Hurst.

8 Leave a comment on verse 8 0 The Cryuff’s of our World, the Platini’s,
Moore, Loftus and Matthews, Frank Swift
The Yashins, the Pele’s, the Dida’s
Would all turn it on, with a blast from a referee’s lip’s.

9 Leave a comment on verse 9 0 When that first whistle blows
The inner me knows
I’m experiencing something so great
Where twenty two souls
Four upright white poles,
And a football, are all reliant on, a two bob tin whistle and fate!

Notes

Just sorta reflecting back, when we had a game we were all proud of,
when…. it has to be said, our game was for anybody and everybody to play, watch and what’s most important of all……. enjoy.

I’m not too sure that’s the case these days.

Peace.

Kev.
