When The Maestro Struck.

1 Leave a comment on verse 1 0 I was blown away, stood watching
When the wee man flicked it in
As were the Norwich City squad
Finest trick they’d ever seen.

2 Leave a comment on verse 2 0 They couldn’t quite believe it
Should they clap or cry out loud
As “Did you just see what that small bloke did?”
Went racing through the crowd.

3 Leave a comment on verse 3 0 Worth the entrance fee alone
Worth the journey up
Worth being there, not stuck indoors at home
Worth exiting the cup?

4 Leave a comment on verse 4 0 Of all the clever flicks I’ve ever seen
This one takes first prize
Performed in open play on a field of green
As us fans stood mesmerized.

5 Leave a comment on verse 5 0 No keepy up type circus tricks
Or juggling the ball for fun
Just a sweet caress to a corner kick
And a goal scored on the run.

6 Leave a comment on verse 6 0 You could watch such a thing forever
Till the cows come home, in fact
It was George Best’s night at Wembley,
Or Charlie George flat on his back.

7 Leave a comment on verse 7 0 On the journey home, we chewed the cud
On what it was, we’d seen
Did we give a sod for “The Hand of God”
When Gian-Franco’s in our team?

Notes

Chelsea v Norwich City, FA Cup replay.

Gian-Franco Zola scores one of his most memorable goals, with a beautiful back flick off his heel that sends the old round thing flying into the onion bag and us paying punters off into fits of… quite unbelievable mass hysteria!

Over in West London, we spoke about this piece of pure magic for ages, and now you lucky football fans you can see it for yourselves, anytime you so desire, live on…You-Tube.

The “Hand of God” reference to Diego Maradona, for those of you who don’t know, relates to Gian-Franco Zola being his (Diego’s) understudy at F.C Napoli, when they were in Serie A.
