Where the Heart is…

1 Leave a comment on verse 1 0 It so often begins in childhood
going with your dad, collecting autographs
in teenage years you go with mates
eating pies and drinking halves

2 Leave a comment on verse 2 0 Then you meet your missus
and find the grass isn’t greener
It just grows and needs mowing
for indoors you need a vacuum cleaner

3 Leave a comment on verse 3 0 Your wife wants you shopping
or going out somewhere with the kids
your football days go missing
the pub crawls are on the skids

4 Leave a comment on verse 4 0 You can’t afford the tickets
wages go on bills and shoes
there’s nowt left for what was important
match day travel, programmes, booze

5 Leave a comment on verse 5 0 You have to get acquainted
with DIY, prams and shelves
but by the time you pause for breath
your ‘babies’ are under twelves

6 Leave a comment on verse 6 0 ‘Take us to the football Dad
we’d really like to go’
‘Ask your mother’, you reply
you feel sure that she’ll say No

7 Leave a comment on verse 7 0 Times move on, budgets stretch
you’re back inside the stand
you blink hard with happiness
take your children by the hand

8 Leave a comment on verse 8 0 They ask if they can get autographs
take a ‘selfie’ with the players
life is a fast moving circle
give time a chance to answer prayers

Notes

Circumstances change all through life and life changes us. A young chap who used to sit next but one to me had to give up his season ticket at the end of last season because his wife was expecting their first child. He must be sat somewhere with his toddler surrounded by the hype of NCFC reaching Wembley for the first time in thirty years and being unable to go.

But the thing about football, no matter how long you’ve been away, it always welcomes you back. With football, it’s only ever a trial separation, its never divorce…
