Who’s Gonna’ Fill Their Shoes

1 Leave a comment on verse 1 0 This world is fall of sporting heroes
But just a few are chosen
To play their hearts out for the team…..
Imagine life without them
All our football heroes
Like those sixties boys who played out Ramsey’s dream

2 Leave a comment on verse 2 0 No there’ll never be another
Blonde headed captain
A Man in Red to cure our World Cup Blues…..
A dribbling Blackpool pixie
Or a Toffee known as Dixie
Lord I wonder, who’s gonna feel their shoes

3 Leave a comment on verse 3 0 Who’s gonna fill their shoes
Who’s gonna stand that tall
Who’s gonna play the Reebok
Or Old Trafford in the fall
Who’s gonna give their heart and soul
To win for me and you
Lord I wonder, who’s gonna fill their shoes

4 Leave a comment on verse 4 0 God Bless the Boys of Munich
ManU’s immortal tunic
‘Busby Babes’ will echo through the years
They tore up the fifties
Duncan, Geoff and Tommy
But much too soon they left us all in tears

5 Leave a comment on verse 5 0 You know the heart of British football
Still beats in teams like Tottenham
Those Glory years are never out of sight
Arsenal, Leeds and Chelsea
The memories stay with me
Those West Ham boys who made our sixties bright

6 Leave a comment on verse 6 0 Who’s gonna fill their shoes
Who’s gonna stand that tall
Who’s gonna play down Green Street
Or at Wembley in the fall
Who’s gonna give their heart and soul
To win for me and you
Lord I wonder, who’s gonna fill their shoes

Notes

This poem was inspired by a song by George Jones in which he plays tribute to legendary country music stars. If I could get him to sing these words I’d be a happy football fan again even though my team is heading for relegation this year. Hopefully it will inspire them to make a late run and avoid the drop…..”Come on you Irons”
