Wretch

1 Leave a comment on verse 1 0 He sat down on the sodden grass and very softly groaned,
“What’s the point in going on?” he impotently moaned.
“No-one knows the hurt I feel, nobody understands.”
And then he burst out crying with his head cupped in his hands.

2 Leave a comment on verse 2 0 I chanced upon this tearful wretch, as I was passing by,
And so I paused, although I hate to see a grown man cry.
“Cheer up!” I called out breezily, “Things cannot be so bad.
I know it’s not my business but you seem a trifle sad.”

3 Leave a comment on verse 3 0 “A trifle sad?” He looked at me and gave a bitter grin.
“I know that you can’t comprehend the dreadful state I’m in.
Their hurtful lies and blasphemies are ringing in my ears,”
And then he took a hankie out to wipe away the tears.

4 Leave a comment on verse 4 0 “Sticks and stones,” I answered him, “You shouldn’t pay attention
To all the petty, spiteful things that little people mention.
They just say these things mindlessly, they do not know what’s what.
Its really not your fault your parents never tied the knot.”

5 Leave a comment on verse 5 0 “Thank you for your kindly words,” he meekly answered back,
“Sometimes I just can’t overcome the unrelenting flak.
I’m feeling very vulnerable, as though I’m all alone,
So, thank you for your caring thoughts and understanding tone.”

6 Leave a comment on verse 6 0 I offered out my hand to him and helped him to his feet.
He said his name was Percy and I told him mine was Pete.
But, as I turned to go, he stood there, rooted to the spot,
Still unsure if he should give a penalty or not.
