Xmas : knitted goalposts

1 Leave a comment on verse 1 0 St Stephen’s Day –
(Boxing Day, for the post plum pudding pugilists)
Tired of turkey trimmings, mince pies and mistletoe
And too far away from a real match, to hear the whistle blow
The locals emerged, bloated and square-eyed

2 Leave a comment on verse 2 0 It was freezing outside –

3 Leave a comment on verse 3 0 So, though everybody wanted to play
Grannie’s knitted sweaters had to stay welded on –
Thus, the young boys ‘Bob the Builder’ prezzies
Were pressed into service :
Dumpers for goalposts

4 Leave a comment on verse 4 0 The toddlers wanted in, too
So they were given their patch
And their ‘Bambi range’ cuddly toys
Became token totems :
Thumpers for goalposts

5 Leave a comment on verse 5 0 We caught sight of one set of parents
Fresh from a Pre-Christmas property trumping
Agreeing to plant their feet :
Gazumpers for goalposts

6 Leave a comment on verse 6 0 Further down the estate
Where the bad boys roamed
They could have had hub caps
As the nub of their target
Instead, they chose :
Bumpers for goalposts

7 Leave a comment on verse 7 0 But as for us, we’re ‘ard, we are!
And traditionalists –
So off came our tops
And we played
In time honoured fashion, with :
Jumpers for goalposts
