Zeus alors!

1 Leave a comment on verse 1 0 Great Gods of yore
Encapsulated in classical poems that last the test of time –
Adoni sculpted in great statues of wisdom’d words
Deity venerated by impassioned poets, themselves revered
by scholars who see
Gods of Love and Lust and Wrath and Peace
Come to life, at the hands of
Virgil, Homer, Heaney, Yeats and MacNeice

2 Leave a comment on verse 2 0 And I?
What can I – uncouth and uncool – offer?
The Gods of my youth, is all

3 Leave a comment on verse 3 0 Osgood. Nevin.
The Cat, Chopper Harris, Charlie Cooke
From Hellenism to Hedonism – in the alliterative
Hudson, Hollins, Houseman, Hinton and Hutchinson
But how should they compare?
To a summer’s day?
To a saccharin’d rose?
Or to Rhodes-Brown?

4 Leave a comment on verse 4 0 And so in vain attempt to edumacate myself, I scan for scansion
Immerse myself in Iambic pentameter, search the libraries
of many a mansion
But what catches my eye? Or both? What draws them out …
such that the sockets – see only soccer?
Why – other people’s Gods – in prose more purple than Ribena
And I dream of them doing battle
on ancient grounds – and modern arena

5 Leave a comment on verse 5 0 I likes what I likes, is all
And so I think, that I’ll stick to my beloved football
For I’m sure that Eros sent his arrow, into my very first
And that shaped my dreams, even though they burst
So from now on in, I’ll wager, that the greatest poems ever written
Will have to feature the massive Micky Droy – and
the dimunitive Ian Britton!

Notes

The closest we ever came to The Iliad – was Bob Iles !
(one of many understudies to Peter Bonetti)
