Zidane didn’t Celebrate

1 Leave a comment on verse 1 0 He didn’t celebrate his goals,
there were so many
each with it’s own story,
it’s own unique blend of talent
and nerve that stunned us all
down the years, some of them
so unbelievable that you’d doubt
your own eyes, and this is on the replay.

2 Leave a comment on verse 2 0 But he never celebrated,
those goals that any player
would have given their least-
favoured foot to have scored.
He let his goals do the talking,
known for stunning pieces of mastery,
and impossible accuracy –
not for a cheap trademark celebration.

3 Leave a comment on verse 3 0 No emotion. Barely acknowledging
that he’d just scored a goal, as if it
were a given fact, like he knew
he’d score – but somehow without
a touch of arrogance. No, it was modest
not celebrating, shying from the glory
just running back to get on with the game
to get the job done

4 Leave a comment on verse 4 0 And how he did get the job done!
I have no idea, how he did
some of that stuff –
who else would dream of netting
a penalty off the underside of the crossbar –
and this against Ginaluigi Buffon
in the World Cup Final, no less
and why not? He could get away
with it. He was that good.

5 Leave a comment on verse 5 0 Zinedine Zidane,
no need to celebrate,
far too cool for backflips or pumping
fists, kissing the badge and you
wouldn’t see him slide on his knees.
Nobody kneeled at his feet to shine
his shoes, because they weren’t even
worthy to do that.

6 Leave a comment on verse 6 0 Far too focused, far too professional
to celebrate before the game
was won. Just running back
to his own half, already that amazing brain
and vision, planning out the next one.

Notes

Alright, this isn’t strictly in-keeping with the theme of goal-celebrations, but as it’s a tribute to the world’s greatest player (not open to debate) perhaps you’ll let it slide?
