It’s that time of year,
When people harbour religious thoughts
Just for a few weeks.

“We do it for the kids really”
Christmas cards and school nativity plays
All have pictures of donkeys in them.

A short drive up the M61
Lies a magnificent, expensive stadium,
Which sometimes doubles as a stable.

Riding quite high in the league,
And at home to a rudderless ship,
There erupts a woeful performance.

A home banker
Becomes a banana skin
Which could herald the start of a slide.

Speak to the Manager:
Don’t forget to buy the carrots,
Just in case the donkeys return.

I don’t mean to be harsh,
And I do try to be fair,
But sometimes it’s hard being a fan.

When the downs
Currently outweigh the ups.
