Falling From Grace In The Eyes Of A Child

1 Leave a comment on verse 1 0 No longer the brash-booted hero out of myth
stands the father, faced down by
the crowd of youths who won’t return
the football. His only son
knows tears are close; self-pity
rising to the throat; witnesses
a cloudy day in Spring
the godhead’s irreversible defeat.

2 Leave a comment on verse 2 0 Wandering home beneath a shrinking sky
they dare not speak the knowledge they have shared.

Notes

Probably far too serious a poem for a fun-site like this one, but it is partly about football, and, as we know, the game can certainly stir the big emotions. It was first published in a book of Bristol football poems called ‘Football Crazy’ about seven or eight years ago. It’s actually more about power than football, but I hope it’s valid, nonetheless.
