First Win Of The Year

The relief and the euphoria
Came like a payslip at the end of January
Long lean weeks of ekeing it out
Subsided in a fountain of golden shirts
Hugging and spinning like giant sunflowers
Hardship and suffering wiped away
By a velveted winning goal
The beer frothed and foamed over
The glass was overflowing
Crowd bubbling, going home with three points

But the debts and deficits
Previously amassed
Are not wiped out by one pay-off
The short shelf-life of cash
Although there was an abundance of cheers
It hasn’t affected the table
