We idolise the men who kick a football
For a living – their deeds, their skills are
Cheered and lauded by thousands
In very public places – but when does
Adulation go too far ? When’s the time
To draw the line, and make a stand…

Perhaps, when a player is nicknamed
‘God’ by his supporters – even gloried
As such on T-shirts, and the like.
All in good fun, I’m sure they’d all say –
But some of us might just take offence
And call it pure, old-fashioned blasphemy.
