The Old Red Scarf

Its words have held the dreams of all
And forged a sea of red
And like a banner carried forth
Flown high above each head
And in the hearts of kings and beggars
The hands of rich and poor
It wrapped us in the glory of
The prayers and songs of those before
A symbol of immortal love
A badge declaring faith
It tells the story of our club
In history a page
And when a copper with his foot
Coldly kicked one such scarf aside
Shanks warned: “Remember son it’s not just a scarf,
This is somebody’s life…”
