I’m the only person in the football ground
silence fills the stadium there’s no-one around
a pin could be deafening you can’t hear a sound
I’m the only person in the football ground

the only soul in the home of expectation
a reservoir of dreams or an outlet for frustration
barely a stone’s throw from Fulham Broadway Station
but lo and behold it’s the envy of the nation

everywhere I gaze is an endless sea of blue
nearly ev’ry seat has a semi-perfect view
such a far cry from the place that I knew
in sixty and seventy and nineteen eighty two

big shiny buildings and big gold cars
big blue megastores and big blue bars
celebrities and wannabies the latest superstars
I just left Stroud but I’ve landed on Mars!

where is the manager and where are the team?
where is the old man who keeps the boots clean?
where are all the groundstaff it’s such a strange scene?
I wouldn’t say it’s scary but it’s eerie like a dream

you can’t quite label it or classify by name
the feeling here that’s screaming out’n longing for a game
I wonder when I leave here will I ever be the same
an’ I shouldn’t really be here but I’m really glad I came

I’m standing like a statue with the floodlights down low
five days to Christmas it’s trying hard to snow
and where there’d be forty two thousand or so
there’s me and myself and this faint blue glow

blue blue seats all in plastic and steel
even though it’s empty it ain’t easy to conceal
moments like this you can never buy or steal
they just get given like a secret you reveal

the only lone figure by a new laid pitch
decadently urban and emphatically rich
your humble little origins are buried in the ditch
the trappings of glory at the flicking of a switch

the only little person in the football ground
security are absent but they’re looking I’ll be bound
outside it’s hectic in this crazy old town
but no-one here can see me cos there’s no-one else around

i’m the only person in the football ground
I shouldn’t really be here but it’s great to stick around
nipped in though a side door and suddenly I found
the clear blue canvas of this waiting football ground
