Three Football Fans

After the three wise men had left,
Joseph heard a knocking.
He stuffed the gold and frankincense
Deep in the baby’s stocking.

And opening the stable door
He was most surprised to find
Three football fans with scarves and drums
And haircuts most unkind.

“Come in, come in,” he said to them
“Just mind that pile of myrrh.
Mary’s doing her exercises,
We won’t be bothering her.”

The football fans approached the crib
With presents for their King,
And laid upon the manger bare,
The offerings they did bring.

A brand new pair of goalie’s gloves,
A patent leather ball,
A lovely pair of shinpads too
They laid out in the stall.

Joseph thanked them very much,
But eyed them with suspicion,
Not half as pleased with that, as with
The previous petition.

He guided them back to the door
Still swathed in brilliant brightness,
But then he suddenly turned around
And asked with great politeness,

“Was it a star that brought you here
To this most humble stable?”
“Oh no,” said one, “There’s a bloody great floodlight
Sticking up from your gable.”
